I am going to miss my local library so much when I go to China. It was named Library of the Year for good reason!

In My Mailbox (52)

image

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren, in which book bloggers post about the books they’ve bought, borrowed or received in the past week.

This will be my first In My Mailbox done on tumblr, since I just recently decided to stop updating my blogspot. Hopefully commenting will be just as easy now that I have Disqus.

I bought all of these books from the library bookstore where I volunteer. Together, they were $3. My Children’s Lit professor recommended The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame to me a while ago, and I finally bought it. I know next to nothing about this book, other than that there’s a mole and a toad. I also bought Tithe and Valiant, the first two books in Holly Black’s Urban Faerie Tales series. I haven’t yet read The Spiderwick Chronicles, which she wrote with Tony DiTerlizzi. I also bought The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, because a lady told me it was the best book she had ever read. Lastly, I bought a little biography on the Dalai Lama. I have a cleaner to help get rid of the sticker residue.

Penguin sent me this copy of The Yellow World by Albert Espinosa. I’m quite excited for this one; I posted about it a while back (x). It is about a world that is within everyone’s reach and full of discoveries, 23 of which Espinosa outlines in his book. “Yellows” are people that come into our lives and change us, whether we spend our who life with them or only meet them briefly on the subway.

All my library books this week were chosen based on their covers. The Age of Hope by David Bergen is a Canadian novel that follows the protagonist, Hope, as she goes through the different phases of her life. 40 Things I Want To Tell You by Alice Kuipers was a bit of a disappointment for me, but I do love the cover. Bird is a sixth form student who is lucky enough to be dating her best friend, but things start to fall apart when she catches the eye of her school’s new resident bad boy. Among the Ghosts by Amber Benson is a children’s ghost story set in a boarding school. I actually have had the cover image saved on my computer for a while, not knowing it was for a book. Glancing through the reviews on Goodreads makes me second guess myself on this one. Choosing a book based on the cover can be a big miss, but I have found some wonderful books that way.

What books did you guys receive this past week?

Where do you find the money to buy so many books? I can barely buy one every 3 months, they are so expensive.

I volunteer at my library’s used bookshop and they sell books for usually 50cents, so most of my new books are from there. I also have store credit at a used bookstore from giving them some of my books I don’t need anymore. I also used to work at a bookstore and had an employee discount, so that made things easier. Other than that, I save money and spend most of my birthday/Christmas money on books. At present, I’ve only been buying new books if they’re a good deal. I would also recommend using The Book Depository, since the prices are good and shipping’s free anywhere in the world.

do you buy all of your books, or borrow from friends and libraries? Because I know I personally love to buy them because I love to own them and have them always be there, but they are so expensive!!!

I mainly borrow books from the library but I do read a lot of my own. I bought a lot of books for not very much from my library’s shop, which raises money for the library. I also build credit at a used bookstore by taking in books I don’t want anymore. I also always check out what’s on discount when I go to bookstores.
