I just finished card cataloguing all of my fiction books.

Yes, this is how I spend my time. And I don’t really have enough books for this to be necessary, but I did it anyways.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, one of this years Oscar nominees for best Short Film (animated). We really, really enjoyed this.

You can read more about its inspirations (Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and Hurricane Katrina, to name a few), its makers, its message (about the power of story), and its iPad app at LATimes.com.

Great blog. Could you help a father who is looking for books for my 8 yr old daughter. She's getting a kindle for good grades and I would like to stock it with some books for her age that represent strong female characters that may be similar in age or slightly older than she is? Any help is appreciated.

The website A Mighty Girl is an excellent resource for books for girls www.amightygirl.com/books?age_range_filter=4&p=1
For younger readers I’m not the best at knowing what books are best for them, but I would recommend Anne of Green Gables, Charlotte’s Web and Pippi Longstocking.

Do you know any books good for a 11 year-old girl? She's read books like the Owls of Gahoole as well as a few "light fantasy" series, but doesn't want to read Harry Potter or anything similar to it. Just wondering. Also, for the Anon who asked about books with characters with Asperger's, I think Oskar from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer had Asperger's. (Could've just been in the movie, and not the book.)

The site A Mighty Girl has a lot of recommendations for books for girls, and I don’t think I’d be able to do any better than that. I would definitely recommend Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and The Mysterious Howling by Maryrose Wood. Although they aren’t light fantasy, some other good books are The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech and From the Mixed Up Files Of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg.
And thanks; I think you’re right about Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, although it’s never mentioned.
