endless list of my favourite books | the secret history by donna tartt

Could it be because it reminds us that we are alive, of our mortality, of our individual souls- which, after all, we are too afraid to surrender but yet make us feel more miserable than any other thing? But isn’t it also pain that often makes us most aware of self? It is a terrible thing to learn as a child that one is a being separate from the world, that no one and no thing hurts along with one’s burned tongues and skinned knees, that one’s aches and pains are all one’s own. Even more terrible, as we grow old, to learn that no person, no matter how beloved, can ever truly understand us. Our own selves make us most unhappy, and that’s why we’re so anxious to lose them, don’t you think?

Some Shameless Self Promotion

I made another tumblr that’s more general/some photography if anyone is interested. [x]

It always jars me when people censor what their children read. If left to their own devices I think kids will mostly self-select which books they can handle. I can't imagine most 11 year olds would be think 50 Shades was interesting if it didn't have the forbidden fruit appeal. At 11 I had full access to my dad's library, and had already read science fiction with a lot weirder sex scenes than 50 Shades. I would have discarded 50 Shades after the 1st chapter.

I think you’re right, it’s banning books that leads kids right to them. 50 Shades would not have held any interest for me.

The World’s Smallest Book Shop, near Kinmount, Ontario.
Went here while driving home from a friend’s cottage today. It’s self serve, open 24 hours and all books are $3. The books on the stool are the ones I bought, except instead of The Gathering I ended up getting Alias Grace.

danielle--debarbarac asked

congrats! Are you okay with Ravenclaw? I remember you saying you felt like a Gryffindor, and I'm always curious how people feel when they're sorted into different houses than the self-ascribe to. I'm still waiting on my email but let's be friends when I get in!

I was actually really happy when I got Ravenclaw! The description seemed to really fit for me. I was sort of expecting it, especially since I took loads of sorting quizes while waiting for my e-mail and they pretty much all placed me in Ravenclaw.
If you message me with your username I can add you so you’ll already have a friend from the start!
